about

FAIRFIELD, Connecticut (October 12, 2010)—After two years of introspection and incubation, Emily Asen announces the release of her new album To The Marrow on her independent label, Violet Maiden Records.

With her second full-length album, Emily Asen has carved out a soft spot between the warm melodies of modern pop and the intimacy of traditional folk. While holding close to the signature acoustic, storytelling, and expressive nature of the genre, Emily’s unique instrumentation makes To The Marrow a folk album with a modern edge.

Inspired by the unassailable truths of the seasons, To The Marrow unravels intricate stories of love, loss, aching and mending told through Emily’s soulful arrangements. The result is a collection of ten original, contemplative tracks that tribute artists like Elliott Smith and Joni Mitchell in their unwavering honesty, yet ring true with Emily’s own unmistakable voice. As a coda to her original set of songs, Emily offers a haunting cover of Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” and an acoustic version of the album’s “Evergreen.”

To The Marrow also touches on the marriage equality issue with the socially-minded song “Under My Tongue.” Signaling her solidarity with the LGBT community, during October and November Emily will be donating a portion of the proceeds from the album to the Human Rights Campaign, the nation’s leading lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization.

Emily recorded To The Marrow at her home studio in Fairfield, CT and helmed full control of the artistic process from initial concept to final artwork. Living up to her multi-instrumentalist reputation, she played nearly every instrument as well as mixed and produced the record. Dennis Arcano contributed drums and percussion. Oscar and Grammy Award-winning engineer Gavin Lurssen, whose credits include albums by Ingrid Michaelson, Ben Harper, and Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, mastered the album.

The album is available through www.emilyasen.com or digitally on Bandcamp, iTunes and Amazon. To preview songs from To The Marrow, visit www.emilyasen.com or www.youtube.com/emilyasen.

Track Name: Baltimore
Verse I:
You borrowed my pocket watch
And left for Baltimore
You wanted money to buy boots
But I had nothing to offer
I’m not expecting much these days
Just let me know how you are
There is not enough love around
To keep you where you are
Where, where you are

Verse II:
So you found a new chopping block
To cut my heart upon
A clean crutch that doesn’t know much
Until you’ve moved on
I am catching on quicker these days
And I too can find new love
But there is not enough you in her
To keep me around

Chorus:
Home is a setting sun
And you revolve ‘round no one, no one

Verse III:
It’s raining in the park
It trickles underground
I am on the 12 o’clock train
To meet you out of town
From my skin to my bones
I am cold as hell
But the sight of you still warms me
To the marrow, to the marrow

Verse IV:
You hand me my best friend’s guitar
And some other lost charms
I’ve returned all that’s not mine
Except for my heart
The train shuffles back to New York
Am I free again?
Or a thief of my own love
And you, some new victim

Chorus:
Home is a setting sun
And you revolve ‘round no one, no one
Home, home is all that I want
And I’m gonna find it in someone, someone
Track Name: The Fool
Verse I:
So comfortable in your mediocrity
I bet you’d bleed
To prove how true a man you really are
I bet you’d lose

Chorus:
I figured you out
I’m bringing you down
I figured you out

Verse II:
They may not know but that don’t make it right
You’ll hurt yourself
This is not art – just to say what is on your mind
Don’t fool yourself

Chorus

Bridge (Instrumental)

Verse III:
Success has made a bore and a fool of you
What will it take
To strike the fear of failure into you?
So much at stake

Chorus x 2
Track Name: In The Marrow
Verse I:
It’s a damp night
She fell asleep while I was reading
I’m all alone again
Just like when I was single or she was in Spain

Verse II:
I know I’m not right
‘Cause I can’t make this place my own
I’m giving up fighting it
I’m gonna make her heart my home

Chorus:
So I hide in the marrow, in the depths of her arms
And pray no one finds me here
I’ll be safe ‘til tomorrow
And then I am on my own

Verse III:
Out in the daylight
Where I don’t have her right by my side
My feet don’t feel like mine
And I long to be out of sight

Chorus
So I can hide in the marrow, in the depths of her arms
And pray no one finds me here
I’ll be safe ‘til tomorrow
And then I am on my own again

Bridge:
This city don’t like me
And the people here tend to forget my name
Go on and spite me
I didn’t come here to entertain you

Chorus x2
Track Name: I'm Sorry
Verse I:
Followed the river to a wishing well
Pockets all empty, no tales to tell
I’m walking home happy to find
I was wrong and always on your mind

Chorus (Instrumental)

Verse II:
Winter came and left an empty stage
For us to write new love songs on
I’ve grown so small by my heart’s mistakes
But Spring will teach my heart to grow

Chorus:
I’m sorry, I am still on your side
I’m sorry, am I still on your mind?

Bridge (Instrumental)

Verse III:
Broke down at the station of your thoughts
Waiting for voices to arrive
Now I’m the reason you don’t talk
I’d break my bones to know your mind

Chorus:
I’m sorry, I am still on your side
I’m sorry, am I still on your mind?
I’m sorry, I am still on your side
Track Name: Under My Tongue
Verse I:
My friends don’t understand how much it hurts
Not to be able to love her like I want
My feet are on the ground
But I’ve got no way to tie her to me

Pre-Chorus:
‘Til that day comes
I will keep this under my tongue

Verse II:
Our hearts grow old just waiting in line
When it is our turn, we’ll smile and say, “That’s alright”
Time don’t concern me
As long as I get what’s mine

Pre-Chorus:
‘Til that day comes
I will keep this under my tongue

Chorus:
But I can’t wait, I won’t wait
The world don’t know what is at stake for our love

Bridge:
May not mean a thing to you
But I’ve got to sing it out loud
And I’d give up all other rights
For the right to love her like I want

Chorus:
But I can’t wait, I won’t wait
The world don’t know what is at stake for our love
Track Name: Overdue
Verse I:
The flowers are opening soon
We’ve been waiting for this day
Won’t be the same without her, though
The sun, it stays away

Like the trees, we bear each breeze
But we’re shaking in our roots
And all we feel is that hunger
For a light that’s long overdue

Verse II:
Her ghost didn’t hang around
No, it left soon as it came
But I still hear her at the door
And I smell her on my clothing

Like Athena, she was graceful
She was brave until the end
And I feel lucky to have known her
To be missing such a good friend

Bridge:
Quiet now, we say goodbye
We don’t make a fuss
Ask yourself, what would she want
And don’t make a fuss

Verse III:
Our mourning blooms each May
It’ll die again in June
But I’m comfortable with pain
If it means that I still love you
Track Name: Long Time Coming
Verse I:
I hum in my sleep – must be dreaming of melodies
She thinks they’re meant for her
No wonder I am numb, I’ve been leading someone on
While I am writing you a song

Chorus:
Heart don’t fail me now
It’s a long time coming
I know it somehow
Love’s a long time coming

Verse II:
It’s New Years Eve – I’m at my parents’ house
Stretched out in front of the TV screen
Three years in a row – must be doing something wrong
‘Cause I am partying alone
Waiting for you to grow up or old, I don’t know
When to let this story go

Chorus

Bridge
You have been a good friend to be so unkind
‘Cause I am burned and bruised dear and wasting my time
So I will go on my own and leave you to your throne

Verse III:
I’m singing in the streets along third avenue
How are you doing without me?

Chorus:
Heart don’t fail me now
It’s a long time coming
I know it somehow
Love’s a long time coming
She won’t let me down
No, I’m not worried
I’ll make it somehow
Love’s a long time coming
Track Name: To The Wind
Verse I:
I want to feel small
Show me a mountain and I will crawl
I’ll pray to the tallest tree
If I want to feel green

Verse II:
My thoughts are heavy
So I set my mind to the wind
I can’t carry this burden
I want to feel silence

Chorus:
All these questions haunting me
Like who am I gonna be?
My heart’s in a coma, may not wake up
She fell in love with a dream

Verse III:
I stopped breaking strings
See how my temperament has changed
I’m not happy about it
‘Cause I still want to feel violent

Chorus:
Same old question haunting me
Who am I supposed to be?
My heart’s in a coma, may not wake up
She fell in love with a dream

Bridge:
Counting everything I ever forgot
I still miss myself the most
Who I was, now who I’m not
I don’t want to let go

Verse IV:
My pockets are empty
I let them hang upside down
I won’t look over my shoulder
‘Cause I want to start over
Track Name: Evergreen
Verse I:
Evergreen, you are the best kind of friend
Knowing what’s good, when it’s bad you don’t bend
Rooted deep down in the ground
Evergreen, the kind of friend who sticks around

Pre-Chorus:
Through all fires, storms, and season change

Verse II:
It is the spring and I’m sweeping out my bed
When it was cold I stayed asleep and missed the best
Part of winter is you
Evergreen, you’d never make that mistake, not you

Pre-Chorus:
Through all fires, storms, and season change

Chorus:
Oh oh, oh oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh oh, you are my evergreen
Oh oh, oh oh oh
Oh oh, oh oh oh, you are my evergreen

Bridge:
Ba da da da da da da… (repeat)

Verse III:
Evergreen, she is the best kind of love
Evergreen loves me better than a rock
And I don’t deserve her
Evergreen, her love grows, it don’t stop

Pre-Chorus:
Through all fires, storms, and seasons
Never tires, grows but stays the same

Chorus
Track Name: Seasons Song
Verse I:
The tides came rushing in to take you back to your shore
And I will miss you here but not like before
Home is not a place it’s a feeling I got with you
Now that you’re gone, I’d better start looking for new shelter soon

Chorus:
Nothing is forgotten in the memory of regret
And there’s so much I wish I’d said to you

Verse II:
The leaves are turning red in the trees ‘round my house
It reminds me of how much I love what don’t stick around
The seasons are smart – they keep your hopes tied to the ground
Still I rise every time I feel that sun hit this town

Chorus
Nothing is forgiven in the memory of torment
And there’s so much I wish I’d never said to you
Track Name: Crazy (Gnarls Barkley Cover)
Verse I:
I remember when, I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that place
Even your emotions had an echo in so much space

Verse II:
And when you’re out there, without care, yeah, I was out of touch
But it wasn’t because I didn’t know enough
I just know too much

Chorus:
Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy? Possibly…

Bridge:
And I hope that you are having the time of your life
But think twice, that’s my only advice

Verse III:
Come on now, who do you, who do you, who do you, who do you think you are?
Ha, ha, ha bless your soul
You really think you’re in control

Chorus:
Well, I think you’re crazy
I think you’re crazy
I think you’re crazy, just like me

Bridge:
My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on a limb
And all I remember is I wanna be like them

Verse IV:
Ever since I was little, ever since I was little it looked like fun
And it’s no coincidence I’ve come
And I can die when I’m done

Chorus:
But maybe I’m crazy
Maybe you’re crazy
Maybe we’re crazy, probably
