about

FAIRFIELD, Connecticut (May 20, 2008) - Violet Maiden Records proudly announces the release of Proof LP, the new full-length album from Connecticut-based singer-songwriter Emily Asen. The record features ten original songs arranged and performed by the artist and a folk rock cover of Coldplay’s “Yellow.”

A recent graduate of New York University’s music business program, Emily was inspired by the examples of Ani DiFranco and Jonatha Brooke to form her own record label, Violet Maiden Records. Proof LP is the second official release from the label, following up Emily’s Avalanche EP from 2007.

Proof LP was recorded, engineered, and produced by Emily in her home-based studio in Fairfield, CT. The record features her talents on an array of instruments including cello, banjo, tambourine, mandolin, electric bass, shakers, keyboards, melodica, and of course guitars. “When you don’t have the budget to hire a group of musicians,” Emily laughs, “it helps to be able to perform most of the instruments yourself. And I really wanted to showcase my musicianship on this record.” She sought out local studio owner and multi-instrumentalist, Grekim Jennings, to contribute drums and mix the songs for the album. Alan Silverman, whose credits include records by Aimee Mann, Norah Jones, and Rufus Wainwright, mastered Proof LP. Emily collaborated with Linda Jean Fisher, a visual artist from Peekskill, New York, to develop the album artwork.

Blending an indie rock attitude with folk tradition and backed by Emily’s solid guitar skills and songwriting, Proof LP is a promising example of what the artist describes as the neofolk movement, a coming together of pop melody, modern sounds, and classic folk guitar styling.

During its first week of release, Proof LP is featured in the “Folk” category on the iTunes storefront and in Amazon’s “Folk: New & Notable” section. The album is available through Emily’s website (www.emilyasen.com), Bandcamp, iTunes, and Amazon.

Track Name: I Walk Alone
Verse I:
Don’t want to be an island anymore
So tired of bridging these waters
Just to watch them burn down again
With no one to meet me at the other end

Verse II:
It’s so rare that I am understood
I cherished the ones who could
They chose to sail away
‘Cause I’m not easy to love

Pre-Chorus:
But this doesn’t feel so new
I never felt like you

Chorus:
‘Cause I walk alone (repeat)

Verse III:
My heart is worn like a prune
From soaking in such solitude
Every moment used to lead me to you
Now they lead away

Pre-Chorus

Chorus

Bridge:
I’m no good if I can’t love, if I can’t love
And I’m no good if I can’t be alone
So I break my own heart (repeat)

Verse IV:
Don’t want to be a shadow anymore
Lingering behind closed doors
Following the light of another life
Was not my goal

Pre-Chorus

Chorus x2
Track Name: Mistake (Disregarded)
Verse I:
Could never feel bad for you
Cause you were always the one who made me cry
Then I met you alone in a dark room
With fresh stars twinkling red on your thighs

Verse II:
You woke up with nothing inside
To pull you from between those black sheets
Where they thought for sure you would die
A casualty left casually aside

Chorus:
And you get Sunday ‘til Monday to ease that pain
You get Sunday ‘til Monday, to make it okay

Verse III:
A mistake found stained T-shirts
In a closet you asked me to clean out
On top of a blue Bic razor
Disregarded with a counterfeit smile

Verse IV:
Did no one ask you what went wrong?
When you were carving letters into your arm
Mapping out your distress in a tattoo
Made permanent for other reasons
Permanent for other reasons

Chorus:
And you get Sunday ‘til Monday to ease that pain
And I am sorry, so sorry I couldn’t help you ease that pain
You get Sunday ‘til Monday to make it okay
And I am sorry, so sorry I couldn’t help you find another way

Verse Outro:
Could never feel bad for you, no
Cause you were always the one who made me cry
Track Name: Caroline
Verse I:
Caroline, Caroline
You weren’t the last thing on my mind but you were close
A call in the night, so unpredictable
Brings this year to a close

Chorus:
And these things take some time
To understand
But then you fall, fall apart on me

Verse II:
We live in a city of borrowed hearts
And corrupted minds
You got yours from a veteran soldier
I don’t know where I got mine

Chorus:
And these things take some time
To understand
But it took us so, so damn long
Oh boy…

Verse III:
Everything is far and long gone by
I stole that line
From a man much wiser than I
To explain how or why

Chorus:
These things take some time
To understand
But it took you

Bridge:
So damn long to lament
So damn long to lament

Verse Outro:
Caroline, Caroline
You weren’t the last thing on my mind
But you were close
Track Name: Treading Water
Verse I:
Don’t remember the day when my heart suddenly had nothing to say
Like a pink seashell where the sounds of emotion dissipate
This little leaky valve is hemorrhaging hope into the streets
And I’m just not comfortable with the world knowing all my dreams

Chorus:
You can’t be the only thing keeping me afloat
If I’ve been treading water this long, just leave me alone

Verse II:
Too many tails I’ve chased, spin myself ‘round and around
Keeping comfortable, a quick transition back into my old self
Too many lies I’ve told to keep the world at bay
Too many souls I’ve sold to touch the stars in a time of need

Chorus:
You can’t be the only thing keeping me afloat
If I’ve been treading water this long, just leave me alone
You can’t be the only thing keeping me awake
If I’ve been hearing voices this long, I must have lost my way

Verse III:
It’d be better to swim than to drop sail and sink
But I have no destination or place to leave
Don’t know where I’ll go, don’t know where I’ll drop my feet
But I would rather be drowning and know you’re free

Chorus:
You can’t be the only thing keeping me afloat
If I’ve been treading water this long, I gotta make it on my own
You can’t be the only thing keeping me awake
If I’ve been hearing voices this long, I gotta find my own way, away
Track Name: Play with Fire
Verse I:
Play with fire and you might get burned
But you are playing with the devil
So you’re bound to get hurt, alright
But if that’s alright, then alright

Verse II:
To the marrow, she’s as light as a feather
She doesn’t feel a thing
Not even if you let her, alright
But if that’s alright, then alright

Chorus:
The truth don’t seem so simple now
Can’t hold a flame to her anyhow

Verse III:
She wants to be bad, she doesn’t want to be good
But she doesn’t leave a victim misunderstood
It isn’t black and it isn’t white
There are no red warnings and no flashing lights
So don’t you analyze

Chorus:
The truth don’t seem so simple now
Can’t hold a flame to her anyhow
If you’re not sure what you’re looking for
It’s best not to mess with a woman who knows

Verse IV:
So if you just let this slide
Then you’re telling her that it’s alright, right, right
To just lie, lie, lie – its all she needs
To keep you content in her fantasy
If that’s alright, then alright
If that’s alright then
Go on and quench her thirst
You know its only getting hotter here on planet earth
But if that’s alright, then alright
The devil has done you right
Track Name: Microphone
Intro:
It is hello and then goodbye
And the absorption of colors in between
Until you fall back towards the sky

Verse I:
I feel your absence like a guitar
With no strings to make me sing
Find your pulse, make it mine
Keep it strong and carry on

Pre-Chorus:
Like the microphone to your heart
I will let them know who you were

Chorus:
Ooh, something individual
Known inside, barely shown to the world
Leaving so much love behind

Verse II:
I miss you the most when I’m alone
Turn off the light to be with your ghost
You keep me awake and help me write this song
Help me sing it out

Pre-Chorus

Chorus

Bridge:
Am I crazy? I don’t know, I thought I saw you
Am I crazy? I don’t know, I thought I saw you

Pre-Chorus:
Like the microphone to your heart
I will become who you were

Chorus
Track Name: Not the One
Verse I:
We’ve both had our problems
But I’m not trying to lead you astray
And our hearts are growing silent
But I can’t stand to see yours this way

Pre-Chorus:
It used to sing, it used to cry, it used to be
Something resembling life so I’ve gotta let you be

Chorus:
Ooh ooh ooh, I’m not the one for you, no
Ooh ooh ooh, I’m not that one, not the one, not the one

Verse II:
And I wish my skin were cellophane
So you could see the pain that I’m in
But I’m too deep in denial now
To let you know my love’s at an end

Pre-Chorus:
But I would rather you be free than you be tied to me
Like an anchor to a ship so honey just let it sink

Chorus x2

Bridge:
Did you know that fate made such careless mistakes?
I guess it must happen all the time
‘Cause this is my fourth true love but I’m not about to give it up
‘Cause someone messed up upstairs (repeat)

Pre-Chorus:
But I would rather you be free than you be tied to me
Like an anchor to a ship so honey just let it sink,

Chorus x2
Track Name: Back from Dark
Verse I:
You left a mark inside of me
It’ll take more than water to wash it clean
Your wrongful words inside my head
That echo forever and ever there

Pre-Chorus:
But now I’ll always know
That it’s a long fall from where we go

Chorus:
My heart breaks slow
Didn’t even know
That it was broken in the first place
Didn’t notice ‘til it was too late

Verse II:
The flesh is worn in the same old place
With no nerves left to feel the pain
Hold a flame to my callous heart
It’ll take more than fire to bleed apart

Pre-Chorus

Chorus

Bridge:
Heart of gold turned black as stone
All of my light once white as bone
Has left me for some distant place
How will I ever find my way back from dark?

Chorus
Track Name: Stone-Dry
Verse I:
I will be a bleeding heart where yours is missing
You don’t know all the tears that you have been missing
That fell from my eyes, from my eyes
While yours remain dry, stone-dry

Chorus:
If people can’t change for you
They don’t know you at all

Verse II:
I am not a wall for you to throw your fists against
You don’t see all the bruises beneath my skin
Where the pain never subsides, never subsides
Keeps me awake at night, sleepless nights

Chorus:
If people can’t change for you
They don’t know you at all
And if people can’t change for love
Then they don’t know how to love at all

Verse III:
Every bone and every muscle exhausted
From the weight of all the troubles in my head
“Leave some, some for me, some for me,” she said
“Leave some, some for me, some for me,” she said

Chorus:
If people can’t change for you
They must not know you at all
And if people can’t change for love
Then they don’t know how
And we don’t know how
We don’t know how to love at all
Track Name: Proof
Verse I:
I’m leaving you now
I can’t stop you from bringing me down
I’ve got a couple okay friends
They gonna help me out until I mend

Pre-Chorus/Chorus:
But the irony is someday you’ll say
You wanted proof
You wanted proof
You wanted proof
But I was right there

Verse II:
I’m taking all this pain
I will take what was good and change my name
I don’t want no one to recognize me
I’m going to vanish like the breeze
You keep your money, yah, you can have these songs
Keep what’s left cause you can’t have my heart

Pre-Chorus/Chorus

Verse III:
I’m leaving you now
I can’t keep you from bringing me down
I’ve got a few okay friends
They gonna help me out until I mend
But you keep your money, yah, you can have these songs
Can’t have my heart, cause it’s moving on

Pre-Chorus/Chorus:
The irony is someday you’ll say
You wanted proof
You wanted proof
That I loved you
But I was right there
Track Name: Yellow (Coldplay Cover)
Verse I:
Look at the stars
Look how they shine for you
And everything you do
Yeah they were all yellow
I came along
I wrote a song for you
And all the things you do
And it was called yellow
So then I took my turn
Oh what a thing to have done
And it was all yellow

Chorus:
Your skin
Oh yeah your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
And you know, you know I love you so
You know I love you so

Verse II:
I swam across
I jumped across for you
Oh what a thing to do
Cause you were all yellow
I drew a line
I drew a line for you
Oh what a thing to do
And it was all yellow

Chorus:
Your skin
Oh yeah your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
And you know, for you I bleed myself dry
For you I bleed myself

Outro:
But its true, look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for you
And all the things you do
